Video Killed the Digital Painting “Star”

image

Ok, you may be wondering when I will start creating original work, but this is kind of the way I approach life in general. I research a lot before I write the paper. I shop around a lot before I purchase a product. In the case of my art, I like the idea of the Atelier model–a student should copy Master works, and hone their skills through repetition. That’s kind of where I’m at right now. On the other hand, this painting is the last one I plan to do with the aid of a video tutorial. My next works will be studies of paintings themselves. Can I take what I’ve learned and use it to recreate paintings in my own? We’ll see.

I enjoyed painting along with John Crump in this video today. We’ll see what happens next.

Digital Painting Gesture with Watts Atelier

I’m still really digging this Procreate app on the iPad. It’s enabling me to practice painting tutorials much quicker than it would if I had to get out my paints. Of course, it’s not a replacement to working traditionally, but it fits with the time constraints of my life right now. So that’s what I’ve been doing. Today I followed along to a short video by the Watts Atelier. The video can be found here.

Colonist #87 Ponders the “New Earth”

My first day on the planet,

I want to dig my naked toes

down into its soil,

no longer Earth, but still

the skin of a new world.

I wonder what roots grow here,

what burrowers and tunnellers

create this friable surface.

I want to get it under my fingernails,

let its microbes schmooze with my cells,

introduce my body to whatever pathogens

it may have to overcome.

Let’s face it – it has always been my way

to get dirty,

to be one with whatever land I walk.

I am here, I will say.

Taste me.

Huge shout out to my friend Andrea Gerig for providing another poem for our intrepid Colonist 87… we didn’t know we were collaborating until we realized that we were both creating the same thing.

Note: If you want the full effect of this piece while staring at it and reading Andrea’s poem you should consider playing some Glitch Mob in the background:)

My confidence in Photoshop is increasing as far as the coloring goes, and this piece required more digital painting than any other one yet as I decided to play with more painted textures than before. In the past I’ve provided a texture layer in the background, but all the texture in this one is entirely painted which gives it a crisper feel in my opinion. I feel that this is my first “real” digital media piece.
